Power Optimisers - What are they? And do you really need them?
Gary, help me out. Enphase with its microinverters versus regular solar panels: While the individual micro inverter is a great idea and I'm completely on board with it, I have to agree with the critics that the extra AC/DC invert step is very costly for efficiency. (7-10%?) Are we going through all these expensive electrical acrobatics so we can keep to only one wire traveling down the side of the house to the powerwall? Who cares? If you had, say, 20 panels, why not just run 20 individual, isolated wires down to the basement, (separated in case one panel goes dark) hook them straight in via some kind of regulator to the battery, and save a conversion step? A wire conduit is ugly regardless of whether you've got 20 wires inside it or just one. I need a reality check here.
Fantastic video. This should be highlighted as the first video to watch, as it explains so much stuff. Thanks, Gary!
I love your vidoes Gary, learning so much before my install takes place. I had been considering a second battery to my system to benefit from a very good 12 month SEG agreement of 40p. What I am now calculating is not purchasing a second 9.5kwh battery but instead using the 12:00 to 07:00 off peak period to fully charge, discharge and then recharge to 100% at an inport rate of 6.9p and an export rate of 40p. My 7.4kwp solar system to do it's thing and export throughout the day.
We have 30 enphase inverters, 8 years on and no service needed. Monitoring panels, a quick look on the app every 6 months shows any dud panels, so far so good I think it's worth the extra cost and the additional 2 year payback time.
That’s brilliant, Michael. And I suspect the experience of many who have a microinverter solution 👍🏻 😀
I wonder if GivEnergy 13.5kw All-in-One go down in price given PW3 has superior features including water submersible bottom half, 11.5kw inverter, better app integration i think?!
How do you access these electronic nunits on a roof when one fails...seems should be easily accessible.
In the UK, scaffolding is required, which can be expensive.
Gary, thanks for Vid. I have 38 Enphase solar panels and 2 X Tesla Power wall batteries at home. But the discharge is a problem as we have a Tesla model Y and would like to get a second EV soon. The discharge of the battery is a disappointment as we often need 14 to 17 Kwh when we are charging the car and at home using appliances. Can you link powerwall 3 to a sting of powerwall 2 batteries?
You’re most welcome - thanks for watching! 😊 Now, is there a way to wire your EV charger(s) so that your Powerwalls don’t see their usage (via the CT Clamps)? That is the key, I think, but an electrician will know better than I do… I’ve been told that with an up-coming software update, the PW3 will become compatible with PW2 👍🏻
Been looking at adding solar but can't affor the £19.5k inc 15kw of growatt battery but see on Octopus only let you feed from a give energy battery. We are already on octpus go as we have an Enyak through motability, watching this has made me realise a battery alone could be a good investment letting us capitalise on that 9p/kw window for all our energy.
Not sure the size of your array, but that seems very expensive? Worth joining this group to get a feel for prices:facebook.com/groups/2197329430289466
Hi, I noted the use of power exceeding your inverter to charge a battery which is limited by the charge requirement of your battery. Would it be possible to dump any excess into a thermal battery such as a hot water tank, sand battery etc?
It depends on the inverter, really. As far as I'm aware, hybrid inverters only work with a limited selection of batteries (usually ones from the same manufacturer).
@@GaryDoesSolar hi, I understand about battery/inverter compatibility likely being an issue but I suppose I’m thinking of either a diverter sending power to a heating element prior to arriving at the inverter or output from the inverter being sent to a heating element rather than the battery if it is fully charged.
Future we have been installing these for over 10 years
You clearly didn’t watch the video then…

According to Alex Reid (a YTuber) all PowerWalls are LiFePo4!
All Powerwall 3s? Thanks! 🙏
@@GaryDoesSolar that’s what he said… @areid13.
I am just considering getting the powerwall 3 with solar installed, I was thinking of going with victron as I have a 3 sided roof so need the 3 mppt`s. This may be the solution to my problems.
Yeah, I would agree!
Your videos provide a useful insght into the options and costs associated with the different Octopus tariffs. I have a 4kwh array and 15.2kwh battery system, panels were installed 12 years ago and and I get the maximum FITT payback, batteries were installed October lat year. I am not sure how the flux tarriff would impact the 50% notional FITT I currently receive. I thought my electricty consumption was high compared to the average UK household 6000 compared to 2900, yours at 7300 seems beyond belief. Are you based in the UK, I have been caught out with figures in the past by South Africans with heated swimming pools, jacuzzis etc. I am on Agile Octopus and manage the charging periods on a daily basis and the loads to best advantage. My average kwh cost is running at 9.8p per kwh and costs me £620 for the 4500 kwh I pay for the year, your figures for Intelligent flux costing 21.45p per kwh would suggest that it is not the best financial option for me, am I missing something here. I do take advantage of less than zero agile costs using air con and heating storage rooms to maximise the benefit. NOTE my figures are for the first 6 months of 2024, doubled up.
Another UK installer has confirmed LFP .
Thanks for this 👍🏻
I am about to get the powerwall 2 installed and will revise my order! Thanks Gary! One thing if you could pls help double check from Tesla as I couldn’t see the three letter “LFP” in the user manual. And I saw in another video saying it’s a Li-Ion on the powerwall label (from a UK user, not US ) . Thanks Gary
I've being doing research for my next video on the PW3 and although there's no official word from Tesla yet (I've asked) I'm pretty much convinced it's LFP now.
@@GaryDoesSolar Your breaking news is a lifesaver, I was about to get the powerwall 2 installation signed ! I will go for Powerwall 3 for sure, but know what the batteries actually are will give a peace of mind ! Also, from Tesla’s given info, the warranty is 80% degradation instead of the powerwall 2’s 70% ! Worth to note!
@wongtom2427 Glad to have been of help 😀👍🏻
@@GaryDoesSolar 👍👍 can’t wait to view your next video on the launch of Powerwall 3 in UK ! 💪 inspiring as always
Unfortunately not available in all the UK as the Powerwall is not available to purchase in Northern Ireland
Ah, such a shame. Hopefully, that will change soon!
Needs to be a smaller more modular package to keep weight resonable for one to two people to handle
Yeah, home batteries are getting increasingly heavier given the higher capacities. Modular is certainly the way forward…
My Powerwall 2 has the storm watch app/function.
Great stuff - comes in really handy!
quite liked the tech, but the unreasonable installation cost from limited pool of installers blew this option out the window for me, so not excited at all
I'm expecting installation prices to go down - not least because the PW3 was designed to make for a very straightforward install.
@@GaryDoesSolar that would require choice and competition Nevertheless, nice system. But for me and simplest vestibule install the PW lads are not as efficient/motivated as the chargepoint lads. Nor is self install possible even for folks professionally qualified.
You will only get about 75% of the rated value so you need 25% extra. However if you live in a cold climate you need to calculate the Temperature Coefficient of VOC or too many volts in winter could kill your inverter.
What’s your source for this claim?
hey, be great if you could do a video in a month or 2 showing if your summer on OIFlux would have beaten regular Flux for £. Regards
Yeah, good idea!
Yet another very informative video Gary, thank you. Quick query on the ref to the gateway. Are you saying that an upcoming software update for the PW will render the gateway unnecessary? If so, any idea when said update might arrive. Happy to save £600 and even happier to have less clobber on the wall!
Thanks and yes, with the planned software update, the Gateway will be optional. Unfortunately I don’t know when that software update will come. If I had to guess, I’d suggest a few months.
Maybe a great battery, but please if you live in regional Australia do not even consider Tesla. They have no support infrastructure for “none city” read regional installations. Good luck
Sorry to hear that
Interesting video. Thank you
Cheers John! 👍🏻
I think the Powerwall still only supplies single phase to the house on blackouts - not 3 phase.
That is correct, 3-phase Gateway is due early next year.
Yup, 3-phase coming soon...
Hope you are having a nice break Gary! I have ordered PW3 last week and very much looking forward to my solar and battery installation. I have moved to Octopus using your referral code so we both should be getting a little bonus soon. Thank you for the great content!
My wife and I love the Lake District - we completed another 17 Wainwrights this time (although it was a struggle!) - thanks for asking :-) Thank you also for thinking of me with the Octopus referral code - that's very kind of you! Please do let me know how your installation goes and your experience with PW3. My email is me@GaryDoesSolar.com
Could you please confirm the bidirectional charging capabilities? Are you able to use this on any EV capable of VTL to charge the powerwall using the cars battery? I would love to hook a BYD ATTO to this to supplement the powerwalls capacity when needed
So, the bi-directional capability is not to do with the battery but the EV in question. Remember PW3 (and indeed any other battery) treats any incoming power as if it was from the solar panels or the grid - it doesn't know that the power might be coming from an EV. So, just go for an EV with V2G capability.
@@GaryDoesSolar ok thanks, that raises a whole beep more questions for me but I’ll wait for Australian availability first and then speak to an installer.
STILL only 13.5? Disappointing. Is it much cheaper and smaller?
13.5kWh is a sufficient capacity for many properties across the world. And if you need higher, you can buy additional units and stack them together 👍🏻
So US don’t get access to the really great options? No Huawai? No BYD? No Sungrow?
Yeah, the US are not really pro-China solar products at the moment...
Lithium Ion batteries need to go though very dangerous especially in EVs...need a new type of batteries that's efficient and has longer range and doesn't drain as fast.
Actually, I'd say the fire risks of home batteries are quite low (much lower than the media would portray). For example, Tesla has shipped 600,000 Powerwalls to date, and I'm sure if they were catching fire, the world would know about it...
@@GaryDoesSolar My issue with home batteries, is that the KW amount is too low for the price they're asking for here in Australia. AUD$15K for a 10Kw battery?? and that's the cheapest. My household has a 8.5kw solar system cannot remember the performance raiting of the invertor though.
The Tesla powerwall is a trick piece of kit but its not at all competitive in the home storage market (I own a Tesla car and Starlink so not anti Tesla). I would pick Pylontech/Dyness/Fogstar instead as they offer a more robust method of storage, are half the price and can we swapped out if you have a faulty module. It only takes one duff cell in a Powerwall and the whole pack goes down. So it's £5800 (plus fitting) for the PW3. For the same money you could have: Six Pylontech 5000's @ £5925 plus fitting, or six Dyness B51100's @ £5970 plus fitting, or six Fogstar SR51's in a rack with busbars for £5,999. All of the three I mention would give you 30KW/h instead of 13KW/h. When buying batteries storage is King in my opinion. For comparison; three PW3's would cost £18,600 which for the same money would get you 30KW of PV, 30KW/h of storage. I really like your content Gary, but please try and be objective when introducing products as I believe this will help grow your channel if you are more impartial.
I'm a bit of a Tesla critic so tend to be quite hard on them but from everything I've read Tesla do have a lot of advantages over rivals with the backup gateway being approved kit in the UK (alongside GivEnergy and I think one other). They also have storm watch which is useful for rural properties which no other manufacturer seems to do.
😊
Another note is usable power, so Tesla have a higher charger and discharge capacity meaning you can pull the power out faster which is highly advantageous when selling back to the grid or if you have a high peak usage. A lot of brands struggle to get the power in and out of the battery in a meaningful capacity.
The Tesla power wall products are not approved for use in Northern Ireland or Ireland.
I am getting PW3 simply because with their Power Management System, there is no need for me to derate or upgrade my main panel.
Great stuff!
Have they not paired up with octopus from what I have been reading
They have, Powerwall 3 will pair with Octopus Intelligent tariffs.
Yes, great news! I'll be covering that in my next PW3 video...
Im not putting any money in Musk's pocket...
Go on, tell us why! Then tell us which CEO’s pocket you do put money into.
Well dont you put money into the Governments pocket COMPULSERY and they waste it.
If an equivalent product was provided by another manufacturer, would you?
@@GaryDoesSolar Depends on their ethics. Musk has none so it's a big fat no to anything TESLA. Shame as the man the company is named for had plenty... TBH, anyone with sufficient space and knowledge can DIY a larger cap battery system for a quarter the price at present using EV batteries. That's exactly where I'm heading. The other consideration is the evolution of Sodium or Iron based batteries, which are probably better suited to home/local community installations and are soon to be far cheaper when production ramps up. I know Lithium has just dropped significantly in price but recycling it is not a cheap process either.
I 100% agree with you .
I will be on the Tesla stand tomorrow at InterSolar will let you know what I find out 👍
Ah brilliant! Yes please 🙏 and I hope the show goes really well for you!
I see Heatable selling these for £7k with no interest, they also sell the 2 model, not sure which to buy as I don’t need the built in inverters
If you can't see yourself ever needing Powerwall 3 with a hybrid inverter or the scalable storage capacity, then worth grabbing a Powerwall 2 at a reduced price. Still a top-market product...
Yeah, and I'm hoping prices will come down soon from there too...
Just wondering about GivEnergy's GivBack tarrif. They say it is NOT supported if you are on Intelligent flux. GivBack stands to make a huge payback in the winter, so will it be that by switching fromFlux to intelligent flux I end up loosing out by not being able to be part of GivBack? (and also the secondary newer tariff) It would be good to know your thoughts..
Essentially, you can only have one remote entity controlling your battery at a time. In the case of GivBack, it's GivEnergy and in the case of Intelligent Octopus Flux, it's Octopus Energy.
Absolute garbage video m8
Oh bugger , I was just opting for a Sigen system as three was not available. Spanner in works !
Haha, sorry! Always great to have new options though! 😀
Great news that we in the UK will have access to the PW3.
Agreed - I think many people had their eye on this one 👍🏻
Is it worth considering the power conversion variance between string inverter and micro inverter based systems when considering the overall power loss of each technology. If it maters, 1st pass plan is a grid tied 17,415 KW solar system ( this is how much will fit on roof without being visible )with 42kWh of batteries (1st pass thought), goal is to allow me to be as energy self contained as possible. This will be a DIY project.
Good point.
Just seen this video and got in a panic ,,, I’m getting powerwall 2 with solar PV installed in two weeks time, I had to call up and revise my order to swap out my power wall 2 for the new powerwall 3 , getting installed late August ❤😊
Same here! Also now not getting the solaredge inverter, so should be cheaper! My date is October though.
Nice. Can I ask who your installer is?
Really glad I was able to catch you in time! 😀😀
Brilliant I want 3 one in each of my 3 properties, hopefully the installers will do a fair price installation.
Yeah, there are many more installers now, all competing with each other - so hopefully you can strike a good deal 👍🏻
Price has come down considerably. I’m sure batteries that size cost twice as much a year ago
Yeah, it’s great to see prices fall like this, and there’s plenty more price drops to come! 😀
@@GaryDoesSolar It's going to put a lot of pressure on companies like Givenergy and Enphase, when you consider that the powerwall 3 is an all in one solution with power cut failover and high continuous output. Until now I was weighing up on going for Givenergy or Enphase, but the powerwall 3 changes all that.
@@johngaigerI agree, John - and this is how markets should operate, where any company has the chance to gain market share with great products and services. I get it that many are not fans of Elon Musk, but they can’t deny he’s improving the market for everyone 👍🏻
i have the powerwall 2 , Do you know if i can use the same gateway as the one i have ?
Yes, If you have the gateway v2, it is still currently used in PW3 installations.
@@SimonA-nz6yi Thats great thanks
As Simon said, Gateway 2 or 3 will work 👍🏻 And very soon you’ll be able to have both PW2 and PW3 operating together.
@@SimonA-nz6yi Thanks thats great news .
@@GaryDoesSolar i wouls have another Powerwall 2 is it's cheaper.
Really not seeing much difference in specs for the PW3 over the PW2
Peek output is higher and has a higher constant load. but it is an intergrated battery, inverter and solar (hybrid). I know it keeps things tidy and compact but i for one dont like all eggs in one basket so to speek. one thing breaks and its all off.
@@robrs210 many thanks for the info, great work👍
Worth watching this video here which also compares the two: ua-cam.com/video/sSpQSDSVQ9M/v-deo.htmlsi=JVBDNHKITc71pax4
